Direct Primary Care – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

Direct Primary Care is a modern healthcare model where patients pay a flat monthly fee to receive unlimited access to their provider without the hassle of insurance billing, co-pays, or deductibles. It allows for more time with your provider and personalized, relationship-based care.

How is DPC different from a traditional primary care office?

Unlike traditional practices that are overwhelmed with patients and insurance paperwork, DPC providers cap their patient load to offer longer appointments, same-day or next-day visits, and direct access to your provider by phone, text, or email.

Do I still need health insurance?

No, we do not bill insurance. By removing third-party payers, we keep costs transparent and focused solely on your care. You may, however, use insurance for medications, imaging, labs, or specialist referrals outside our office.

Can I use my HSA/FSA to pay for my membership?

Often, yes. HSAs and FSAs can usually be used for DPC memberships, but we advise checking with your account administrator or financial advisor to confirm based on current IRS rules.

Can your Nurse Practitioner prescribe medications and assist with medication refills?

Yes, our  Nurse Practitioner at Magnolia Wellness Center have prescriptive authority in South Carolina, allowing them to prescribe medications, including controlled substances, and assist with medication refills.

What if I need labs, imaging, or specialty care?

We partner with local labs and imaging centers to offer discounted cash pricing. We also coordinate referrals to specialists and continue to support your care throughout that process.

Can I really contact my provider directly?

Yes! One of the best parts of DPC is having your provider just a call, text, or email away. Whether you have a quick question or a follow-up concern, your provider is accessible eve after hours in many cases.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule through email, by phone, or by text depending on your provider. With fewer patients to manage, DPC clinics offer same-day or next-day appointments and little to no wait time.

Do you accept patients with pre-existing conditions?

Absolutely. We welcome all patients regardless of age or health history. DPC is especially beneficial for managing chronic conditions with more frequent and personalized attention.

What if I’m hospitalized or need emergency care?

DPC does not cover hospital or emergency services. You should still carry health insurance for those situations. However, your DPC provider can assist with post-hospital follow-up care and ongoing coordination.

How do I cancel my membership?

There are no long-term contracts. You can cancel at any time with proper notice (usually 30 days). We want you to stay because you’re happy with your care—not because you’re locked in.
